Highlanders win NJCAA Division I Men's Golf National Championship

The McLennan men's golf team captured the program's second National Championship in college history last week at the par-72, 7,192- yard Hampton Cove River Course in Hunstville, Ala.

MCC (290-294-304-297 -- 1185) and New Mexico (295-295-306-289 -- 1185) finished the final round in a tie for first place, forcing a playoff. The Highlanders won the playoff by one stroke to claim the title.

"We knew that we were six strokes down after the first 12 holes," coach Vince Clark said. "The boys knew their backs were against they wall and they had to deliver. They are true champions and am I so proud of them."

Midland finished in third with 299-305-306-285 -- 1195 followed by Indian Hills in fourth with 299-309-300-289 -- 1197 and Central Alabama in fifth with 290-307-307-296 -- 1200.

Sophomore Curt McCormac led the Highlanders with 73-70-75-76 -- 294 to finish in eighth place individually. Tommy Sikes of Midland claimed the individual title with 69-75-72-69 -- 285.

Other MCC scores: Jeremy Lambright, tied for 13th, 73-78-78-69 -- 298; Juan Salcedo, tied for 21st, 76-75-76-74 -- 301; Garrett Driver, tied for 29th, 70-75-79-78 -- 302; Jacob Aaholm, tied for 29th, 74-74-75-79 -- 302.
